It’s time to write another piece for Friday Fictioneers! Thank you to Rochelle Wisoff-Fields who hosts this venture. Each week Rochelle chooses a photo prompt to inspire writers to produce a 100 word piece of flash fiction. Do use the link to her blog if you are interested in joining the group. It’s a great way to get involved in writing.

The significance of a bird
“What is it?” she asked.
He watched the bird make an attempt to free itself.
“No idea.”
He looked across the desolate landscape.
“A living creature,” he said. “Another sign of life, at last.”
The bird watched as she put some crushed apple on the ground.
“Let’s see if it eats some,” she said.
He looked at her sleeve. “Pull out that loose thread and tie it round this thing’s leg.”
Gently, he put the bird down. It squawked indignantly and flew off.
He shrugged. “Perhaps it’ll come back,” he said. “And bring others. That would really tell us something!”
The obvious question: what has happened to all the living things? At least there is a sign of hope.

Something terrible must have happened to destroy most forms of life but, somehow, these people have survived. You’re quite right to say that the bird represents hope. Thank you for your response.

Indeed… what is going on here?

Thank you for asking. The area has been reduced to a wasteland and appears devoid of most living creatures but, at this stage, we don’t have any information about what has happened. The ‘contact’ with the bird has given these two people the opportunity to believe that there is more ‘life’ out there.

I’m somewhat reminded of Genesis 8 and how Noah kept sending birds out to see if it was dry enough for people and animals to leave the ark. Birds seem to be special indicators of certain things.

I’m glad you made that particular connection. Thank you! There is, indeed, a great deal of symbolism attached to birds – in the Bible and in art and literature. I find it fascinating!

Wow interesting take on the prompt. Let’s hope they find many more birds and a place to live.

They are certainly hoping that the arrival of this bird will signal that there are more around. Thank you for your response.

That was bleak! Seems like there’s a generation there who can’t even identify birds. Good writing, Edith.
