Murmurs from the deep – Friday Fictioneers

Thank you to Rochelle Wisoff-Fields who hosts Friday Fictioneers.  Each week Rochelle chooses a photo prompt to inspire writers to produce a 100 word piece of flash fiction.  Do use the link to her blog if you are interested in joining the group.  It’s a great way to get involved in writing.

Murmurs from the deep

He drifted slowly through the melancholy waters to the sea bed.  He was not alone.  All around, people were gathering.  Their expressionless faces gazed upwards.  Their silent voices asked the question.

 “What happened?”

His wife was shaking him out of his fevered sleep, distraught at the state he was in.

She wept as he explained how he had been taken ill and hadn’t made it to the port. Then she told him that the ferry he would have travelled on had run aground and sunk.

“So many passengers were lost,” she said.

“I know. I saw them all,” he replied.
