The time has come – Friday Fictioneers

The start of a second year of writing! Thank you to Rochelle Wisoff-Fields who hosts Friday Fictioneers.  Each week Rochelle chooses a photo prompt to inspire writers to produce a 100 word piece of flash fiction.  Do use the link to her blog if you are interested in joining the group.  It’s a great way to get involved in writing.

The time has come

The dark mist rolled across town.  They tried the lights.  Nothing happened.  There was no power in the house.  The phone was dead.

 “What’s happening?” she said.

He tried the radio and television.  Nothing.  His laptop and tablet had some battery strength but that was all.  His mobile phone was useless.

“Try yours,” he said, knowing there was no point.

They heard noises outside.  Their neighbours were gathering in confusion.

“Does anyone know what’s going on?”  Her voice shook as she spoke.  No-one had an answer.

Standing supreme in the park, the huge wooden structure vibrated, then stood still.  Waiting.

    1. Thank you for your comment. The reader is in the same position as the characters in the story – unsure of what is going on and not knowing what will happen next. The personification of the huge wooden structure may suggest that it is somehow connected to the events at the beginning of the story and, like the people in the story, is waiting but for very different reasons . . .
