A special occasion! I’m delighted that I have been able to contribute a story to Friday Fictioneers each week for a year. If you’re not writing yet but would like to do so, why not use the link to Rochelle Wisoff-Fields who hosts Friday Fictioneers? Each week Rochelle chooses a photo prompt to inspire writers to produce a 100 word piece of flash fiction. Come on and join the group! We look forward to reading your stories. Sincere thanks to Rochelle for making it all possible.
Watching
I looked through the door and into the house. Everyone was busy with the preparations for a special occasion. The celebration of the birth of my first grandchild.
I loved our family gatherings! Although we didn’t all live close to each another, we invariably got together for significant events. This was certainly one of those!
Two young women came out onto the veranda.
“The first party without Mum,” said my elder daughter tearfully.
““She’ll be watching over us,” said her sister. “Just like she always did.”
I envied the grasshopper. So much closer to them than I could ever be.
Happy Anniversary, Edith. You’re welcome. 😉
Shalom,
Rochelle

This feels exactly like grief feels after a few years. One smiles at the happy memories, at the pictures, at the celebratory remembrances. Then one looks at the pictures again, and remembers that we can never share this plane with those gone like we used to. It’s bittersweet (and sort of comforting) to think that the same happens to them.
Lucky cricket, indeed.
Happy anniversary, by the way. 🙂

I thought mum was a ghost and only the grasshopper could see her. I’d be envious of the grasshopper too.

I felt sad for this spirit who remained, yet can’t join the party, it must be purgatory.
