The Swan – Friday Fictioneers

Thank you to Rochelle Wisoff-Fields who hosts Friday Fictioneers.  Each week Rochelle chooses a photo prompt to inspire writers to produce a 100 word piece of flash fiction.  Do use the link to her blog if you are interested in joining the group.  It’s a great way to get involved in writing.

The Swan

Dusk settled over the lake.  Two shadowy figures, ignoring the signs, set up their equipment and settled down to wait for their first catch.

The male swan left the nest to find food for his family.  Sensing movement, he plunged his beak into the water and became entangled in the fishing line.  The frantic beating of his wings pulled the line tighter around him. With a final cry of despair, he sank into the water.

In the town, the audience listened spellbound to the music of ‘The Swan’.  The lights flickered and went out.  The auditorium was plunged into darkness.

    1. Thank you for your response. Sadly the story is based on an actual event. A swan on a lake near us met the same fate. I’m still raging about it. I love the music and was so pleased to refer to it in my ‘tribute’ to the swan.
