Where love resides

They sought shelter in the alcove.  Ducking under the chain, they huddled by the door to avoid the driving rain.

“Such beautiful stonework,” she said.  “A pity this place is so run down.  It would make a great place to live.”  The door creaked as if pleased to hear her words.

Some months later their wedding car pulled up outside the restored building.  He led her to the entrance, removed her blindfold and she stared, enchanted, at the chain festooned with flowers and the beautifully decorated archway.

Sweeping her up in his arms he whispered, “Welcome to our new home!”

The Swan

Dusk settled over the lake.  Two shadowy figures, ignoring the signs, set up their equipment and settled down to wait for their first catch.

The male swan left the nest to find food for his family.  Sensing movement, he plunged his beak into the water and became entangled in the fishing line.  The frantic beating of his wings pulled the line tighter around him. With a final cry of despair, he sank into the water.

In the town, the audience listened spellbound to the music of ‘The Swan’.  The lights flickered and went out.  The auditorium was plunged into darkness.

Faith, hope and love

The accommodation for novices had a bold and vivid roof as if to remind its occupants of the bright lives they had relinquished.  Her life had lacked shining moments and this was a place of refuge.

She was surprised to see a man climbing across the rooftops.  Minutes later, his face appeared at her window. He climbed in, planted a kiss on her astonished face and said, “At last I’ve found you!”

She recognised the young man she shyly loved some years before.

 A bell gently tolled.

 “Time for prayers,” she said.

“Ours have been answered,” he laughed.  “Let’s go.”

Ninth birthday trade-in

Daddy worked away but always spent time with them on their birthdays.  Today, she would have him to herself.  Her brother was on a week’s school trip.

So excited on the train, she barely heard what Mummy said about “another woman” and “you mustn’t love her.”

Daddy’s car was at the station.  A woman and a boy about her age sat inside.  The day out didn’t last long.  There were no more.

Next day at school they wrote letters to their siblings on the trip.  Her paper remained blank and the teacher scolded her.  She lowered her head in desperate sadness.
