A work of art – Friday Fictioneers

Friday Fictioneers is a weekly group hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields who chooses a photo prompt to inspire writers to produce a 100 word piece of flash fiction.  Do use the link to her blog if you are interested in joining the group.  It’s a great way to get involved in writing.

A work of art

I stared at the painting in disbelief.  It couldn’t be!

The style was unmistakeable – the juxtaposition of buildings and people, the pensive central character contrasting with the leaping figure, the shadowy female – all typical of his work.

My heart was racing.  I took my drink and found a seat.

My husband had painted the picture ten years earlier.  When thieves burst into the gallery, he defended it to his last breath.  It could have been anywhere but it was here, under my nose.

I would get it back.  Nothing would stop me.  I started to plan my next move.

    1. I’m glad you thought this was a good story. Thank you for telling me so. I take your point about that particular sentence. It may (or may not) give too much explanation but I intended to have the main character taking a seat to get over the shock and also to focus on what happened years ago. In this way she draws the readers into the drama of past events and gives them some insight into her response to seeing the painting. I hope that, like you, they will be wishing her a positive outcome.
