Lost at sea

“I’ll take you sailing,” he said. The menace in his voice indicated that it would not be a pleasant trip.  Yet here we were, about to go on board.  I looked at my brother.  He stared back at me.

His resentment at my birth had deepened as the years had passed.  Nothing I did could reduce his bitterness and hostility.  His intention was to get rid of me.

The boat was barely seaworthy.  How far out before it sank?  There would be no escape.  The ketamine would see to that.

I wished him well and dragged him onto the deck.

Displaced

It had been abandoned.  Its inhabitants had flown leaving no clue to their fate or the events that had overtaken them.

I knew how that felt.  Change had come quickly and unexpectedly.  One morning, I started my day as usual.  By the afternoon, I was fleeing for my life.  I felt as lost and vulnerable as the wasps’ nest resting on the pebbles.

A voice softly called me.  “We have to go now.”

The waves crept up and gave the nest a gentle nudge.  I whispered my despair into its empty spaces and watched as the sea took it away.

A step too far

I took a step onto the wooden bridge that spanned the divide between two countries; a step across the threshold to a new life.

The preparations were complete.  Soon two families and friends would come together in celebration.

The roof of the border checkpoint glowed with a rosy hue.  I moved forward.

A grey cloud moved across the face of the sun.  Suddenly, everything looked less bright, less promising.

Fear sliced through me like the keenest blade. Before long I would be face to face with the stranger who would be my husband; a man whose name I didn’t know.

A work of art

I stared at the painting in disbelief.  It couldn’t be!

The style was unmistakeable – the juxtaposition of buildings and people, the pensive central character contrasting with the leaping figure, the shadowy female – all typical of his work.

My heart was racing.  I took my drink and found a seat.

My husband had painted the picture ten years earlier.  When thieves burst into the gallery, he defended it to his last breath.  It could have been anywhere but it was here, under my nose.

I would get it back.  Nothing would stop me.  I started to plan my next move.
