Returning home – Friday Fictioneers

Friday Fictioneers is a weekly group hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields who chooses a photo prompt to inspire writers to produce a 100 word piece of flash fiction.  This is my second contribution.  Thank you to all those who responded to my first story.  Your feedback has encouraged me.

Returning home

The path wound up the hill. She was almost there. Home.

She had dreamed of this moment for so long. She had planned her movements, awaited her opportunity and, when the time came, had carefully slipped away.

Gazing down, she looked over the small town and began her descent. Eager anticipation rose tentatively inside her.

The silence was all-embracing. Nothing lived here now. No people, no animals, no birds. Rounding a corner she was confronted by a toilet dumped out in the open. Its defiant display of bright flowers the only sign of life in this desolate place. She wept.
